About the Farm

A 12-hectare farm in Mazabuka is looking for a practical and responsible Farm Supervisor to oversee day-to-day farm operations and manage the farm team.

Main Areas of Responsibility

The successful candidate's primary responsibility will be the management of:

• Hass Avocado: 1.3 hectares
• Tomatoes
• Onions

The supervisor will be expected to plan, coordinate and monitor production activities, manage workers and ensure these enterprises are properly maintained and productive.

The farm also has other enterprises, including:

• Winter Maize
• Village Chickens
• Goats

Knowledge and experience in these additional enterprises will be an added advantage, although the main focus of the position is crop production, particularly Hass avocado, tomatoes and onions.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage and supervise the farm's day-to-day operations.
• Lead and coordinate farm workers and allocate daily tasks.
• Plan and monitor production activities for tomatoes, onions and Hass avocado.
• Monitor crop health, irrigation, weeding, spraying and other field activities.
• Ensure farm activities are carried out on time and according to required standards.
• Monitor the use of farm inputs, equipment and other resources.
• Keep proper records of farm activities, inputs, labour and production.
• Identify farm challenges early and report them to the owner.
• Coordinate other farm enterprises when required.
• Maintain productivity and continuity of operations when the owners are away.
• Take responsibility for the farm's daily operations and ensure the existing investment is properly managed.

Ideal Candidate

• At least 2 years of practical farm experience.
• A Certificate or Diploma in Agriculture or a related field.
• Strong practical knowledge of crop production.
• Experience in tomato and onion production.
• Knowledge of Hass avocado production will be highly relevant.
• Good ability to supervise and manage farm workers.
• Ability to work independently and make sound day-to-day operational decisions.
• Good record-keeping and reporting skills.
• Knowledge of maize, poultry and goat production will be an added advantage.

Opportunity

The farm is seeking someone who can take charge of daily farm operations, effectively manage the existing team and ensure production continues even when the owners are unavailable.

Salary & Benefits

Salary: K3,000 per month during the 3-month probation period, increasing to K3,500 per month after successful probation.

Agriculture Department (Nakambala)

This position reports to the Farm Manager and operates within the Agriculture function. The successful candidate will supervise and monitor farm activities to ensure quality and activity targets are achieved as well as assist management in the development of farm plans that ensure long-term growth, development and sustainability.

Key Performance Areas

• Supervise all farming activities, timing and quality standards related to cane production.
• Execute and supervise farm resource and activity plans.
• Supervise farm activities and implement continuous improvement measures to ensure adherence to activity standards.
• Monitor correct use of materials and other farm inputs.
• Carryout inspections and activity assessments and submit reports to management.
• Maintain discipline within the team.
• Keep daily record of farm activity data for capturing into cane Pro.
• Assist management in monitoring labor requirement in line with farm plan.
• Implement continuous improvement practices by monitoring work practices, and ensuring that tools and techniques are applied to deliver high-quality sugar cane.
• Develop skills within the team through on-the-job coaching and mentoring.
• Conduct on the job training and instruction on various farm activities.
• Report any identified risks to management.
• Monitoring and execution of farm activities by service providers to ensure compliance with standards.
• Promote and adhere to ABF procedures, policies and guidelines, including, without limitation, those relating to SHERQ, Competition Law and Anti-Bribery and Corruption (ABC).

Minimum Requirements

• Grade 12 School Certificate.
• Diploma in Agriculture or related fields.
• Preferably 3 years' experience in sugar cane agriculture.
• Experience with leading teams and resource allocation.
• Good relationship building and maintenance skills.
• Good team leadership skills.
• Suitably qualified applicants must provide certificates which have been verified by the Zambia Qualifications Authority (ZAQA).
